NORTHERN CAPE POLICE READY TO SECURE 2026 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

The Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, known as PROV JOINTS, says that security measures have been put in place across all five districts of the province.  The structure, chaired by Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, says extensive planning, security assessments, and intelligence gathering have been carried out ahead of the elections.

Security operations will include increased police visibility, crime prevention activities, and rapid response teams. Police will also focus on protecting voting stations, IEC officials, and election staff, as well as election materials.

PROV JOINTS says it will work closely with the Independent Electoral Commission, the South African National Defence Force, traffic authorities, municipal law enforcement, and other government departments.

Lieutenant General Otola says that the main aim is to protect residents and ensure that eligible voters can cast their votes freely, without fear or intimidation.

The structure has also warned that violence, threats, intimidation, damage to property, and disruptions to lawful political activities will not be tolerated. Anyone involved in criminal activities will face the law, regardless of their political affiliation.

Political parties, candidates, and their supporters have been urged to respect one another and allow people to express their political views without fear.  Residents are also encouraged to remain calm, avoid confrontation, and report any suspicious activities or election-related incidents to their nearest police station.

PROV JOINTS has further warned the public against spreading unverified information on social media, saying misleading messages could create unnecessary panic and increase tensions.
