Police noted a video clip trending depicting Johnny Besnaar

The South African police service has noted with serious concern a video clip currently trending and circulating on various social media platforms, depicting the deputy provincial commissioner for policing in the Northern Cape major general Johnny Besnaar. Police spokesperson brigadier Mashay Gamieldien says the SAPS wishes to place it on record that it categorically refutes and distances itself from the content, allegations and insinuations contained in the circulating video. Gamieldien says the narrative being propagated is false, misleading and does not represent the facts. She says the SAPS further cautions that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have created opportunities for the manipulation of digital content, including images, video footage and audio recordings, to produce fabricated material that can appear authentic and deceive unsuspecting members of the public. She says members of the public are urged not to accept every video, voice recording or image circulating on social media as genuine without independently verifying its authenticity and source.
