Africa urged to increase participation in green hydrogen value chain

Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, says Africa must increase its participation in the green hydrogen value chain over the next three years. Speaking at the 2026 Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, she said the sector is entering a critical new phase, with projects moving from planning to investment and implementation.

Gina says major projects should create opportunities for local supply chains, technology, manufacturing and skills development.

She also joined Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane in launching the province’s Green Hydrogen Strategy, aimed at attracting investment, developing new industries and creating jobs. Meanwhile, Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, announced the first wave of South Africa’s national green hydrogen and Power-to-X projects.
