DA says the lack of D6 DNA tissue collection kits in the Northern Cape has been exposed after critical biological evidence could not be collected following a medical procedure involving a young rape victim in Kimberley last week. DA Northern Cape provincial leader MPL Dr. Isak Fritz says in rape cases where a victim falls pregnant and undergoes a termination of pregnancy, medical professionals need DNA kits to collect samples of tissue for forensic testing. Fritz says this evidence can help establish paternity, identify suspects and secure convictions. He says follow-ups with police stations in Kimberley, Galeshewe and Hartswater indicate that DNA kits are currently widely unavailable. Fritz says the DA will conduct oversight inspections at SAPS stations to establish the full extent of the DNA kit stock-outs and will also escalate the matter to the national spokespersons for urgent intervention with the national police minister.
