Prieska regional court sentenced a 19-year-old man
The Prieska regional court sentenced a 19-year-old Siyabonga Shaun Abrahams on the 28th July 2026 to 12 years' direct imprisonment for attempted murder. Police spokesperson warrant officer Molefi Shemane says four years of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence committed during the period of suspension. Shemane says the conviction stems from an incident that occurred during the early hours of Saturday, the 13th December 2025 in Prieska, when the accused and the victim, Richard Engelbrecht, had been consuming alcohol together after purchasing wine. Shemane says the victim later accompanied a female friend to obtain more alcohol but returned empty-handed. The accused allegedly tried to stab the woman but missed, he then turned on the victim and stabbed him twice in the upper back. The court declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm.
