National Science Month officially launched
The Department
of Science, Technology and Innovation has officially launched South Africa's
first National Science Month. The campaign, which runs throughout July, aims to
bring science, technology and innovation closer to communities while inspiring
young people to pursue careers in science.
Deputy Minister
Nomalungelo Gina said at the launch that science must play a key role in
addressing unemployment, inequality, economic growth and service delivery. More
than 3,000 people attended the event at the Vaal University of Technology,
where over 130 exhibitions and 100 exhibitors took part.
As part of the
programme, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Professor Blade Nzimande
will deliver the inaugural Science, Technology and Innovation Public Lecture at
Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni this evening. A range of science-related
activities will be held across the country during July to promote public
interest in science and innovation.
