The Constitutional
Court Art Collection travelling exhibition, which is held under the title “A
luta Continua: Reflecting on 30 years of democracyâ€, made its first stop in
Kimberley after it was showcased in Makhanda in Grahamstown during the National
Arts Festival. Constitutional Court judge and human rights activist Justice
Albie Sachs shared on how each of the art pieces captured the spirit of South
Africa as it moved from racist oppression into a democratic country. He says more
than 100 art pieces, including various mediums such as tapestry, print and
sculpture, were on display during the exhibition. Sachs added that many
international judges all pointed to the South African Constitutional Court as
one of the top courts in the world, not just in Africa, which means they
possess the skills and intelligence as well as the warmth of heart to have
brought about enormous changes. He further added the late Kimberley-born Judge
Yvonne Mokgoro played a pivotal role in the display of artwork at the
Constitutional Court and that the exhibition will run until September 9.
